Pre Op Tip #1 - Bathroom

There are some changes you will need to make to your bathroom in order to prepare for your post op recovery.

In my case, I have a small bathroom with a window.

The first change I made was to remove the glass shower doors and replace them with a standard shower curtain setup.

Second, I added an ADA Compliant Grab Bar. Since I have a window with a sill within the tub space that is easily reached, I didn't need to add any additional grab bars to support my needs. If you don't have a second means of support within the shower/ tub space, it's highly recommended that you add at least one. I found this site helpful:

I also added a "Gorilla Grip" shower mat.

Other options available that you may find helpful are categorized as "Shower Chairs". There are so many options available from simple chairs that you set inside the Tub / Shower to ones that have rotating chairs making it easier to get in and out of the Tub / Shower.

I ordered one that placed two legs in the tub and legs outside and had a chair that rotated. I didn't have the space for it and it turned out I didn't need it, so I returned it. I would recommend that you review your needs and the space you have available first before ordering one.

You will also need to add some sort of device that will raise your toilet seat. I selected a rather simple design that fir within the limited space I have available. It was easy to assemble and install. You can find similar models on Amazon. I'd recommend measuring the space that you have available before ordering a model that suits your needs.

You will notice the white plastic device in the lower right corner. This is one of the cheaper solutions available. It's a toilet spacer that raises you about 4 inches above the toilet seat. It probably works well for kids and people with small backsides. I am neither. I placed it on my toilet for a test sitting before actual use. I realized immediately that for me, this was a big mess just waiting to happen, so I sent it back. I can't recommend it based on my perspective.

Ideally, getting your bathroom setup in advance to support your recovery is very important. Take a few moments to measure your bathroom and identify the necessary updates. You'll be glad you resolved this step prior to your surgery.
