Whether you've just undergone a surgical procedure or managed to injure yourself, pain and swelling are an experience we've all shared at least once in our lives. When it comes to treatment there are a lot of different options.
In my case, I'm recovering from the replacement of my left hip, which does in fact produce a fair amount of pain and swelling. Aside from medications, I'm using cryotherapy options to treat both the swelling and the pain as recommended by my physician.
For the purposes of this post and blog, I'll get straight to what has been working for me:
Polar Products Active Ice System - Connect everything together and start it up. This product simply circulates ice cold water to the therapy pad which is wrapped around your hip. It includes a hose-connected cooler where you add water and ice. There is a power adapter that includes a simple, inline remote that you plug into the cooler.

Real easy setup instructions get you up and icing quickly.
The pad is largest enough to wrap around and reach the areas of your thigh and hip that need attention. I found that lying on my back, on the pad directly adjacent to my gluteus maximus to start, made it easier to wrap the pad around to the rest of my hip. I got creative with the use of pillows in order to make sure I maintained good contact with the therapy pad.
Default setting is 10 minutes on / 10 minutes off at level 4 (Coldest)
I have used this product to recover from two knee surgeries, one shoulder surgery and now one hip surgery.
Next posting I'll get into more detail about ice packs.
